NEW DELHI: Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani has said that it has been decided to ban the use of plastic in Alliance Air and Air India Express from October 2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged Indians to launch a new revolution to prevent the use of single-use plastic to protect the environment.
Prime Minister Modi had said this during his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'. He said that "when we celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Bapu this year, we will not only dedicate him open 'defecation-free India' but on that day a new mass movement against plastic will be laid across the country. Air India has decided to ban plastic after PM Modi's appeal. Air India has informed all catering service providers, in-flight services, MMDs and all airports to check the use of plastic from its aviation services.

On the other hand, Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani said, "we will manage the situation like last time when Pakistan threatens to shut down its airspace for India". He said, "Air India is fully capable of tackling the challenges that may come after the closure of the air route". Lohani, however, avoided the question of government financial help to deal with the situation.
