On Wednesday, the Maharashtra government has announced the appointment of the state's senior-most IAS officer Sanjay Kumar as the new Chief Secretary of the state. Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta will retire on June 30 and Sanjay Kumar will take charge from July 1. The current Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta has been appointed as the Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister.

According to a release from the Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office (CMO), "Sanjay Kumar will be the new Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. He will take charge from July 1. The current Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta will retire on June 30."

Apart from this, it has been said in the release that after retiring from the post of Chief Secretary, Mehta has been appointed as the Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister. He said, "He has been appointed by the Chief Minister for this post, as it is an important time for the state due to coronovirus and other issues. Therefore, an experienced person is needed in the Chief Minister's Office." At present, the new Chief Secretary of the state, Sanjay Kumar is working in the post of Additional Chief Secretary Housing and also looks after the additional work of the Home Department. Sanjay Kumar is a 1984 batch IAS officer. He will assume the post of Chief Secretary after Ajoy Mehta retires on June 30. Sanjay Kumar's tenure on this post will be for only eight months as he has retirement on 28 February 2021.
