It's Akshaya Trithiya on May 7 this year. The muhurat of Akshaya Trithiya is the Shukla Paksha of the Trithiya, or third day, of the Hindu month of Vaishakh. While Akshaya Tritiya is increasingly being associated with buying gold, it is actually an aboojh muhurat, or a day when it is auspicious to begin any new venture, without consulting the almanac... It's a day for people to launch a new business, open a new account book, start a fresh venture, pursue a new idea. No wonder, people perform ceremonies like house-warming, marriage, etc on this day without much ado of consulting a panchang or pandit. Because Akshaya means never-ending, it fosters the belief that a business begun will never end.

Akshaya Trithiya is associated with gold purchases and many people wait for the day to make investments in gold. People believe that the wealth entering their home on this day will be a continuous process. That's why jewellery stores stock gold coins inscribed with Lakshmi-motifs. There's another story of wealth behind Akshaya Trithiya. It was on this day that Krishna's poor friend, Sudama, paid a visit to his friend, carrying only a bag of puffed rice. However, in return, Krishna made his friend wealthy beyond recognition. Recognising the spiritual message of the story, and not just the material, people also donate to the needy on this auspicious occasion. The most common donations are water-filled pitchers (jal daan), fan (pankha), umbrella, cow, besides money, of course.

It is believed that it was on this day that sage Ved Vyasa began the composition of Mahabharata. It also marks the auspicious occasion of the birthday of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and therefore, also known as Parsu Jayanti. It is also the day that the Treta Yuga began and the river Ganges descended to earth from heaven. It was on this day that Kubera was made the custodian of wealth and property by none less than Goddess Lakshmi. It was also the day that Goddess Annapoorna Devi was born. In the Mahabharata, Yudhishtira receives the akshaya patra on this day, which he uses to serve food for all the needy people of his kingdom. Knowing the significance of the day, the sage Adi Shankara apparently recited the Kanaka Dhara Stotra on this very day to invite wealth into the lives of a poor couple at whose house he stopped for bhiksha during his travels. Despite their poverty, they offered a gooseberry for the acharya to eat.
