A gene called COMT helps the body to manage dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical, which is released while the person is drinking alcohol or taking narcotics.
In fact, William R. Lovallo of the College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma has focused on the mutation of THE COMT. People with mutations in the COMT gene are more susceptible to the effects of depression in early life.
The COMT gene is more prone to depression and leads to alcohol and drugs at the age of 15. This research has been published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experiential Research.
"The unfavorability of early life does not make everyone drunk," he said, "Research shows that those with this gene mutation are at greater risk of developing depression in their lives."
