Alert intensifies In Kerala After 12-year-old boy Dies Of Nipah Virus Infection

Kerala state has been put on high alert after a 12-year-old boy died of Nipah virus infection in the early hours of Sunday. The child breathed his last at a private hospital in Calicut.

According to reports, the boy had recently recovered from Covid-19 and was admitted at the Calicut Medical College as he had fever that did not subside. He was detected with Nipah virus disease. Later, he was shifted to the private hospital on September 1, where he succumbed to the disease on Sunday.

State Health Minister Veena George said that three-body fluid samples taken from the boy were tested positive at the National Virology Lab, Pune. But no one from his immediate family or neighborhood has shown any symptoms. Five immediate relatives of the deceased boy and a dozen others who have interacted with him, have been reportedly kept under observation.

A team under the leadership of health minister Veena George is camping there to coordinate activities. The Centre has also rushed a team to study the situation and help the state officials. The Centre has advised the state to launch immediate public health measures which include active case search in the family, village and areas with similar topography especially in Malappuram. Ms. George added that the government has put the health system in place and asked people not to panic. Arrangements are being made to set up a special Nipah ward at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
