Algerian health officials have confirmed the discovery of the first instance of the Omicron Covid-19 varient, according to local media reports.

At the International Airport of Algiers, a foreign individual who entered Algeria on December 10 tested positive for Covid-19. According to sources, his sample, which was delivered to the Institut Pasteur d'Alger, was confirmed as the Omicron variety of the Covid-19 on Tuesday.

According to reports, Fawzi Derrar, acting Director of the Institut Pasteur d'Alger, the foreign person was quarantined upon his arrival in Algeria.

The Omicron strain, which was first discovered in southern Africa, has been found in at least 65 nations throughout the world, according to the WHO. Algerian health officials reported 280 new Covid-19 cases and four new fatalities in the last 24 hours, bringing the country's total number of cases to 213,288 and the death toll to 6,155.
