The film will be released in theatres on July 30, 2021. The film is based on a chapter in the book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai' by Husain Zaidi, the popular author of 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt are working together for the first time through this film. Apart from Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and Vikrant Massey will also be seen playing important roles in the film.

Gangubai Kathiawadi was a famous Mumbai resident, who was sold by her husband for just 500 rupees. In this movie, the struggles of Gangubai's life are told about how she was married at a young age and then how she was sold by her husband. Sanjay Leela Bhansali had wanted to make a film on this role for a long time. He worked on it comfortably but had to start shooting for it in a hurry, as Salman Khan refused to work in the production film InshaAllah. In this movie, he wanted to take Alia with Salman. Salman has worked with Sanjay in 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'.
