Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has dismissed the petition filed by two young women seeking recognition of the marriage between the two. Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Anju Devi, the mother of a young woman, rejected the petition of both the girls.

Anju Devi had filed this petition seeking the handing over of her 23-year-old daughter. He alleged that his daughter was illegally held captive by another 22-year-old girl. Earlier, on April 6, the court had asked the state government's counsel to ensure the presence of both the girls on the next day. On 7 April, both the girls appeared in the court and they told that both have married each other and their marriage should be recognized. The women argued in court that while the Hindu Marriage Act talks of marriage between two people, the law did not oppose same-sex marriage.

On this, the public prosecutor said in his argument that, 'Marriage in Hindu culture is a sacrament which can be performed only between a man and a woman. Our country runs according to Indian culture, religion and Indian law. In India, marriage is considered a sacred sacrament, whereas in other countries, marriage is a contract. After which the court dismissed the petition of the girls and disposed of the habeas corpus petition filed by the girl's mother.
