Alleged 'religious conversions' in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur, two arrested

Jashpur: On Sunday, police in Jashpur, Chhattisgarh, arrested two people, including a pastor, for allegedly attempting religious conversions of locals.

Following a complaint, the defendants, Pastor Christopher Tirki and Jyoti Prakash Toppo, were apprehended from Bhalutola neighbourhood under Bagiya village panchayat. According to the police, Tirki and Toppo, who have been charged under the Indian Penal Code and the Freedom of Religion Act, allegedly converted local tribals to Christianity at Toppo's home in the hamlet.

"A case has been filed under sections 295A and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as section 4 of the Freedom of Religion Act. Further investigation is required ", according to Manish Kunwar, Jashpur's Deputy Superintendent of Police.

"On Sunday, 68 members from 25 Kanwar families attended a prayer service led by Christian pastors," according to Vishwa Hindu Parishad division co-minister Rajesh Gupta. He went on to say, "The conversion is being actively fought by the police and the administration. Simultaneously, Hindu organisations are actively working to prevent conversion by providing constant advice to converts."
