New Delhi: A significant development in the investigation of the grenade attack on the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, on March 23, 2023, has emerged. Recent media reports reveal that Amarjot, the brother-in-law of MP Amritpal Singh, is the individual accused of throwing the grenade.

Amarjot, a resident of Butala village in Amritsar, is reportedly involved in pro-Khalistan activities, including demonstrating in support of Khalistan and hoisting the Khalistan flag at the Indian High Commission premises. This information surfaced during a recent National Investigation Agency (NIA) operation.

On Friday, the NIA conducted coordinated raids across four districts in Punjab. These raids took place at three locations in Gurdaspur district, two in Amritsar district, and one each in Patiala and Moga districts around 5 am. The targeted properties included those belonging to Amritpal Singh's relatives: Amarjot in Butala, Gurmukh Singh in Haon (Gurdaspur), and Pargat Singh in Jallukheda (Amritsar). During the raids, the authorities questioned the occupants and seized various electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and DVRs.

The grenade attack, carried out by a pro-Khalistan mob, involved throwing two grenades at the Indian High Commission. Initial investigations suggested possible involvement of Pakistan, leading to the NIA's takeover of the case. On June 24, 2023, a Hindustan Times report indicated that Amarjot Singh had allegedly led the mob responsible for the attack, even as Punjab Police were searching for him.

Following this report, Iman Singh Khara of 'Waris Punjab De' contested the allegations, arguing that Amarjot Singh’s involvement was unfounded and that the Ottawa incident was being misrepresented. Despite these claims, Amarjot Singh's name has resurfaced in connection with the attack.
