NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced substantial upgrades to telecom infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted mobile connectivity for pilgrims participating in the Amarnathji Yatra 2024.
In collaboration with major Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) like Airtel, BSNL, and Reliance JIO, the infrastructure has been bolstered to provide continuous coverage across the Yatra routes.
To ensure comprehensive coverage, a total of 82 sites operated by Airtel, RJIL, and BSNL will be active. This includes the installation of 31 new sites along the Yatra routes, increasing from 51 in 2023 to 82 in 2024. These improvements are aimed at delivering seamless mobile connectivity to pilgrims and the general public.
The routes from Lakhanpur to Qazigund and from Qazigund to Pahalgam and Baltal are fully covered with 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, incorporating 5G technology at various locations for pilgrims and public use.
Additionally, several SIM distribution centers have been established along with other locations to extend telecom services to Yatris.
The Yatra commenced on June 29 this year and will conclude on August 19, spanning 52 days. Devotees of Lord Shiva undertake this strenuous annual pilgrimage to the sacred cave shrine nestled in the Kashmir Himalayas during July-August.
Organized by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, the Amarnath Yatra offers two routes: through Pahalgam and via Baltal. Baltal serves as the base camp for pilgrims in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. This year's Yatra is being conducted amidst recent terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
