Companies such as Zomato, Swiggy, and BigBasket are delivering alcohol in many cities of the country, but now Amazon will soon start delivering alcohol. In a notice issued on Friday, the state-owned Beverages Corporation, an agency authorized to carry out the online retail trade of liquor business in the state, said that Amazon would be among those companies. One who has been found eligible for registration with the authorities.
Apart from Amazon, Bigbasket will also deliver alcohol in West Bengal. Amazon has been invited to sign a memorandum of understanding with the state, although Amazon and BigBasket have not issued any official statements about the partnership. According to the IWSR drinks market analysis, the liquor market in West Bengal is worth about $ 27.2 billion.
This will be a big challenge for Amazon, although the company will also make huge profits. It took a bold step to make its inroads in the market. After the nationwide lockdown in March, the government imposed a ban on the sale of liquor, although the ban was later lifted. With the lifting of the ban, online delivery of liquor was approved in states like Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
