The study says that children who are exposed to high levels of air pollution are at higher risk of developing schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a type of mental illness that negatively affects the thinking, feeling, and behavior of a person. A combined study of pollution data from the Department of Environmental Sciences and genetic data from IPSYCH shows that the higher the level of pollution, the higher the risk of schizophrenia.

Increasing the density of air pollution by 10 milligrams per cubic meter daily increases the risk of schizophrenia by about 20%. Senior researcher for this study, Henritt Thisted Horsdal, said, "Children who live in an environment with air pollution of more than 25 milligrams per cubic meter per day are 60% more likely to develop schizophrenia."

This study on pollution has been published in the journal JAMA Network Open Science. Researchers based on these data said that the risk of schizophrenia in a person's life is about 2%. This means that in 2 out of every 100, there is a possibility of it happening. Those exposed to the lowest level of air pollution have a risk of schizophrenia up to 2%, while those who are exposed to the highest level of pollution, this figure rises to about 3%.
