New Delhi: The US has done something that could disrupt diplomatic relations between India and it. The 7th Fleet of the US Navy has said that it has carried out freedom of navigation operations within India's Special Economic Zone in the Lakshadweep Islands without India's permission. The Government of India is keeping a close watch on the statement after it came out. It does not allow India's maritime security policy for such exercises and requires approval.

A statement from 7 Fleet Public Affairs in the US said, "On April 7, the warship USS John Paul Jones demonstrated navigation rights and freedom in Indian territory, 130 nautical miles from Lakshadweep, without seeking permission from India. This is in accordance with international laws. India's claim that military exercises in its Special Economic Zone or prior to commuting will have to be given in advance does not match global laws.''

The statement could sour relations between the two countries, as the US is one of India's closest strategic partners and both countries oppose China's maritime expansionism, especially in the South China Sea. India and the US conduct naval exercises throughout the year.
