LOS ANGELES: The Summit of the Americas, which was hosted by the United States, ended in Los Angeles amid demonstrations over the exclusion of some Latin American countries and human rights breaches, among other issues.

According to the Xinhua report, the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has raised issues about the event's overall legality and boosted the number of critics. Many leaders of state from across the Americas attended the summit to discuss major issues affecting their countries and region's futures, including trade, immigration, economic development, climate change, post-Covid recovery, and more.

At the conference, US President Joe Biden committed to addressing the growing levels of mass migration and economic misery hitting countries south of the border, and announced $1.9 billion in corporate investment in Latin America alone.
However, scepticism persists, as some countries believe the US is not doing enough to assist their closest allies and neighbours, such as Colombian President Ivan Duque, who pointed out that his country only received less than 30% of the international pledges made last year to assist in the massive influx of Venezuelan refugees.

Even before the summit, there was controversy and scepticism because the US refused to invite leaders of nations like Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, claiming that democracy for each nation's citizens was an "important ingredient" for the region's future.
