Guwahati: Following the bloody skirmish at the Assam-Mizoram border that left seven people dead, including six policemen of the state, Ramandeep Kaur has taken the charge as SP Cachar today. The Assam Police department made the decision for reshuffle today and transferred Kaur to Silchar headquarters to take stock of the situation and maintain normalcy in the district. She was earlier serving as the Silchar superintendent of Police. This Assam Police department reshuffle also included Chirang SP Gaurav Upadhyay being transferred as SP Hailakandi.

The recent inter-state border clash with Mizoram claimed seven lives while 50 others were injured, including Cachar SP – Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant. The incident led to a band called by the Barak Democratic Front (BDF) which also received unanimous support from several political outfits. The bandh has disrupted normalcy as all business organizations were shut down and a very few vehicles were seen plying along the Assam-Mizoram border. Enraged people of the adjoining district called for an economic blockade against Mizoram and goods trucks were hauled that were enroute to the state.

It may be mentioned that Mizoram, which was previously called the Lushai Hills, was carved out of Greater Assam as a Union territory in 1972 before being given the status of a full-fledged state in 1987. Assam and Mizoram share a total of 164.6 km border that include Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts on Assam's part while Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl districts of Mizoram. Tension along the inter-state border of the two states has been escalating since October last year, with frequent incidents of arson and encroachment of land.
