India's star boxer Amit Panghal and six-time world champion veteran Mary Kom have won their respective matches. In the match played on Saturday, Panghal won the men's (52 kg) and Mary Kom in the women's 51 kg category to advance to the quarterfinals. Both players are now just one win away from getting tickets for the Tokyo Olympics.

According to reports, Amit defeated Inkmanadakh Kharkhu of Mongolia to make it to the quarter-finals of the Asian qualifiers and now he is one win away from making it to the Olympics. 23-year-old top seed Panghal, who became the first Indian boxer to win a silver medal at the World Championships last year, defeated the Mongolian boxer 3–2 in a hard-fought decision. Panghal counter-attacked from the very beginning and his left hand was very effective especially in the first two rounds.

Mongolian boxer was more dominating in the third round but Panghal still managed to win. In the next match, Panghal will face Carlo Pallam of the Philippines. Panghal has defeated him in the semi-finals of the Asian Games in 2018 and the quarter-finals of the 2019 World Championships.
