NEW DELHI: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah urged all cooperatives in the nation on Tuesday to register themselves on the Government e-Market (GeM) platform, calling it the greatest approach to market and grow them.

In a first-ever move, Minister Shah made the comments during the e-launch of the onboarding of cooperatives on the GeM portal, a first-ever initiative as so far GeM platform was not enabled for registration of cooperative societies as buyers on platform.

All qualifying cooperatives in the entire nation can now begin placing orders on the GeM, a one-stop system for purchasing goods and services.

The GeM has been established as the nation's procurement site to offer Public Sector Units (PSUs) and departments and ministries of the Central and State Governments an end-to-end online marketplace for common-use products and services in a transparent and effective way.

The home minister said this when discussing the value of GeM: "When Mahatma Gandhi coined the phrase "Quit India Movement" on this day (August 9), the British Empire was shaken. On August 15, 1947, India officially became independent. This year, the "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" marks the opening of the cooperative societies' GeM (portal)."
Shah also urged all cooperatives to get ready for GeM portal registration. "Recognize the GeM. The GeM is the best method for promoting a cooperative."

Approximately  8.54 lakh cooperatives in India with nearly 29 crore members purchasing goods and services from the open market required  a platform to avail competitive prices through a transparent and efficient process.
