Amit Shah to attend 18th Formation Day of NDMA today

New Delhi: The 18th Formation Day of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will be held today in New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the event.

The Home Minister will be the Chief guest at the event at Vigyan Bhawan, where he will address to the NDMA officers and other people. Ajay Bhalla, who is the Union Home Secretary, will also be attending the meet.

On December 23, 2005, the Indian government passed the Disaster Management Act, which called for the creation of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), led by the Prime Minister, and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs), which are also led by the respective Chief Ministers, to lead and implement a holistic and integrated approach to disaster management in India.

The NDMA is the top organisation in India for disaster management. The Disaster Management Act, 2005, says that the NDMA has to be set up and that the State and District levels have to make sure that institutional mechanisms can work well.

The NDMA envisions to "build a safer and more disaster-resistant India through a holistic, proactive, technology-driven, and sustainable development strategy that involves all stakeholders and promotes a culture of prevention, preparedness, and mitigation", it said.

The NDMA is in charge of making policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster management to make sure that disasters are dealt with quickly and effectively.

The NDMA’s various responsibilities include making policies for disaster management, approving the national plan made by government ministries or departments based on the national plan, setting guidelines for state authorities to follow when making the state plan, and setting guidelines for the different ministries or departments of the government of India to follow so as to measure for preventing disasters can be integrated.
