Hyderabad: BJP leader and party MP from Adilabad Soyam Bapu Rao on Tuesday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address a meeting at Vei Udala Mari on September 17 on the occasion of Telangana Liberation Day. The meeting is also being seen as part of the BJP's campaign for the upcoming elections to the Huzurabad assembly seat. BJP has been demanding for a long time that the government should officially celebrate Telangana Liberation Day.

The TRS government had turned down the demand on the ground that it could lead to communal disturbances. State BJP President Bandi Sanjay will stop his ongoing 'Padyatra' for a day to attend the public meeting. On September 17, 1948, the erstwhile Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union after India's military action 'Operation Polo', popularly known as 'Police Action'.

Every year, BJP workers try to hoist the national flag in government offices and public places to demand to officially celebrate the day. The BJP has alleged that the ruling party is scared of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). The public meeting to be addressed by Shah will be held at Vei Udala Mari. It is said that the Nizam's 'razakars' (volunteers) allegedly killed 1,000 people fighting against the Nizam's government near a banyan tree in Udala Mari. Later this place came to be known as Vei Udala Mari.
