CHENNAI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Martin Scorsese, and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur on Friday announced the 2022 Film Preservation & Restoration Workshop.

The seventh edition of the workshop will be held from December 4 to 10 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay and is being organised by the Dungarpur-led nonprofit organisation Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Scorsese's The Film Foundation (TFF) and the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) (CSMVS Museum).

Since its launch in 2015, the training programme has successfully visited cities like Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata and gained the support of notable actors from the film industry, including Shyam Benegal, Naseeruddin Shah, Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, SS Rajamouli, Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Goutam Ghose.

The workshop, which was created by David Walsh, the FIAF's coordinator for training and outreach, will feature both theoretical and hands-on group sessions on the preservation and restoration of analogue and digital films as well as film-related materials including paper, photos, and 3D objects.

Also, the Regal Cinema in Mumbai will show restored classics on a daily basis. One of these is Behula from 2021, a rare Indian silent film featuring Patience Cooper, one of the first silent film superstars in India. A Hard Day's Night, Raging Bull, In the Mood for Love, Il Conformista, and Thamp are among the other films in the lineup.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur expressed his happiness that the workshop is back after a three-year hiatus. With extremely few resources and rising expenditures, organising the workshop this year has been a tremendous undertaking. However, we were aware that we had to make up for the lost time and momentum after spending the previous six years travelling the nation and instructing over 300 people in India and its neighbouring nations.
