KIEV: An ammunition depot reportedly exploded in Crimea on Tuesday morning, triggering an evacuation, the official said.   Videos posted on social media indicated a large fire and a cloud of smoke rising from the site of the blast in the northern part of Crimea, reports adds.

According to Sergei Aksyonov, the leader of Crimea who was selected by Russia, two persons were hurt in the Dzhankoi area. He stated that the Russian Defense Ministry would have to provide a statement regarding the detonation's causes.

Aksyonov said  in a video message shared on Telegram, the explosions are still happening. A 5-km security zone is being set up  for the residents' safety, he said, adding that an evacuation was in progress. He said that the National Guard, Civil Defense, and the Ministry of Defense all had soldiers on the ground.

According to the officials, the incident happened in the village of Maiskoye at a former farm that Russian military are presently using as a storage facility for weapons. A power supply substation also caught fire.

A week ago, several explosions tore through the Saki military base in Crimea, leaving one person dead and 14 injured. The most recent incident occurred there.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet's naval aviation was significantly crippled by the explosion, according to a recent assessment by the British Ministry of Defence.

Analysts claim that Ukraine attacked the base; however, Kiev has not formally acknowledged the attack. Several fighter jets were reportedly damaged in the explosion.
