CHANDIGARH: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh bas asked the Punjab government to release the Sikh youths detained amid an ongoing police crackdown on pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh within 24 hours.

On the sidelines of an event in Jalandhar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said strict action will be taken against anyone who tries to disturb the peace in the state. Mann has asked the director general of police to release those who were detained as a preventive measure and whose involvement in any anti-national activity has not been found, according to reports.

Punjab Police reported on Sunday that it had freed 197 people out of the 353 people it had put into preventive detention on suspicion of violating the peace and upsetting law and order following a police sweep against Amritpal and his friends.

The Jathedar also condemned the state government for invoking the National Security Act against some persons during the police crackdown.

Following the March 18 action against members of the "Waris Punjab De" led by Amritpal Singh, the Jathedar called a special meeting of Sikh organisations, comprising intellectuals, Sikh attorneys, journalists, and religious and social leaders, to address the current state of affairs in Punjab.

Addressing the gathering, the Jathedar issued the Punjab government a 24-hour deadline to release all Sikh youths in Punjab or else the Sikh community's resentment will continue to stew.

Further criticising certain Media networks, he charged them with spreading anti-Sikh propaganda by labelling the detained adolescents as separatists.
