Recently Assam and Arunachal Pradesh govt agreed on Monday to conduct a ground level survey on the condition of the inter-state boundary as a first move toward settling the long-running border dispute, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On Monday, he met with his colleague from Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, to discuss the issue. Following the debate, Sarma remarked on Twitter, "Our goal is resolving boundary concerns with neighbours." Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share an 804.1-kilometer border with 1,200 sites of contention, and the two states have resolved to conduct a ground-level study to determine the status of the border.

Sarma tweeted that he discussed steps for a lasting solution to the long-pending matter with Hon'ble CM of Arunachal Pradesh Sh @PemaKhanduBJP, who came all the way to Guwahati.

After independence, Arunachal Pradesh was a centrally controlled area that eventually became a union territory until gaining full statehood in 1987. Since entering office in May last year, Sarma has taken the lead in resolving Assam's border conflicts with its neighbours, saying during a news conference here on Sunday that the problems with Arunachal Pradesh will be resolved "in due course of time."

Following multiple rounds of negotiations at various levels, Assam and Meghalaya made proposals to Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month for resolving the dispute in six of the total 12 states. Sarma met with Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio here on Sunday, after which the latter informed reporters in Kohima on Monday that the two states are willing to settle the long-standing inter-state border issue outside of court.
