Story of Anant Chaturdashi Vrat - In olden times there was a sage named Sumant. His wife's name was Deeksha. Both had a beautiful and virtuous daughter Susheela. She was a pious girl. When Sushila grew up, her mother Deeksha died. After the death of the first wife, Sumant was concerned about the upbringing of his children. Considering this, Sumant married another woman named Karkasha.

After some time, Sushila was married by her father Rishi Sumant to Kaundinya Rishi. Even after marriage, however, Sushila had to suffer a lot of poverty. One day, while wandering in the forests, Susheela saw - there were some women who were worshiping some deity. When Sushila asked about this, they told her about the importance of Anant Vrat.

When Sushila heard this, she performed this fast and tied an infinite thread with fourteen knots and came to the sage Kaundinya. Gradually the days of Sushila and Kaundinya started turning. One day when sage Kaundinya saw this thread, he asked about it. Susheela told the whole thing. Kaundinya became enraged by this and wondered why the credit for his hard work is going to Pooja.

Angry Kaundinya then broke that thread. With this, the days of both of them started changing once again. Gradually, all their property was destroyed. When Kaundinya discussed this with his wife, the wife said that this is happening because of insulting the infinite God. Koundinya realized his mistake.

After this, for 14 years, Kaundinya fasted on Anant Chaturdashi. Hari was pleased with this and slowly the days of both started changing once again and they started living happily. It is said that Yudhishthira also obeyed Sri Krishna and took an infinite vow, due to which the Pandavas were victorious in the war of Mahabharata and their days turned around.
