Visakhapatnam: A huge 2 tonne (2000 Kg) whale shark fish has been rescued by forest officials in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Some local fishermen found a large whale shark trapped in a fishing net on the Tanthdi beach in Visakhapatnam on December 18. A local wildlife photographer immediately informed the forest department about it.

DFO, forest department staff rushed to the spot under the direction of Visakhapatnam IFS Anant Shankar and confirmed it as the world's largest fish and endangered species whale shark. The 2-tonne whale shark was rescued and sent back to the sea with tremendous cooperation from the forest department, fishermen and wildlife conservationists. Now the whale shark has gone back to the depths of the sea. DFO said photos of whale sharks for identification have now been sent to the Shark Research Team in the Maldives. This will help us understand them better.

He said that fishermen have been advised and requested to inform the forest department directly for rescue and safe release in such a situation, as time is important in such actions. In such a case, compensation will be provided to fishermen in case of any damage to fishing nets.
