Andy Murray withdrew from his match against top-ranked Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open tennis on Thursday due to illness. The announcement came shortly before the start of the third round match between the two players. Murray, who returned from a hip surgery twice, had beaten Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov in his opening two matches in Madrid.

This was the first time since January this year that the former world number one has won two matches in a row. No further information about Murray's illness is available at the moment. Murray's current ranking is 78 and is constantly improving.   A few months ago, there were reports that top seed Daniil Medvedev defeated Andy Murray 6.4, 6.2 in the second round of the Miami Open tennis and is now eyeing to reach the semi-finals to achieve the number one ranking. At the moment, at number one is Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

In the last 18 years, only five men's players have reached the number one ranking, including Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Medvedev and Murray.   Medvedev was number one for three weeks but on Monday Djokovic has come back to the top. In another match, defending champion Hubert Hurkacz defeated Arthur Rinderneck 7.6, 6.2 to advance to the third round.   In the women's section, Naomi Osaka has managed to reach the fourth round without landing on the court. He was given a walkover by Carolina Muchova. Belinda Benchich defeated Heather Watson 6.4, 6.1. Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins defeated Vera Zvonareva 6.1, 6.4. Ons Jabauer defeated Keia Kanepi by 6.3, 6.0.
