New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to allow former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh and cabinet minister Nawab Malik to cast their votes in the MLC elections. Both the leaders are currently in jail in separate cases. Maharashtra is going to polls today for the MLC elections in which Deshmukh and Malik had approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to cast their votes. Earlier, the High Court had turned down the demand of both of them.

The counsel for former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik had sought an urgent hearing in the case. Notably, there are only 285 votes in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. Malik and Deshmukh are in judicial custody and Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke had passed away in the same.

The Bombay High Court had on Friday turned down the plea of the two leaders. A bench of Justice NJ Jamadar had said that they will prepare the written order by Friday evening. In response, advocate Amit Desai, who appeared for Malik in the court, said the order should be given a little early as the elections are on Monday. But the court rejected their demand.
