New Delhi: Veteran Team India spinner Anil Kumble is likely to instruct the Indian team once again. In fact, Ravi Shastri is about to resign as coach after the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, BCCI, headed by Sourav Ganguly, can ask Kumble to apply for the post of head coach of Team India along with VVS Laxman. Kumble was the coach of Team India for a year between 2016-17 when the Cricket Advisory Committee headed by Sachin Tendulkar, Laxman, and Ganguly appointed him in place of Shastri.

Kumble later resigned after the final champions trophy defeat against Pakistan due to differences with skipper Virat Kohli. With Kumble, BCCI may also contact Laxman, who has been the mentor of the IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the past few years. Kumble, however, will be BCCI's favorite as Laxman will also be in contention. A senior source in the BCCI said on conditions for anonymity that 'Anil Kumble may return.' The way COA had removed Kohli under pressure was not a good example. However, it also depends on whether Kumble or Laxman is ready to apply for the post.

Kohli has already announced that he will step down as T20 captain after the World Cup. For BCCI officials, a distinguished Indian coach is always the first choice and both Kumble and Laxman are among the legendary players of Indian cricket. However, one foreign coach may be another option. The source said, "The criteria for the job of BCCI coach will be such that only selected few people with a very good record as players, as well as experience in coaching/mentorship, can apply for the top post.'' Asked if Vikram Rathore was also involved in the race, the official said, "He can apply if he wants, but he does not have the stature to become the head coach of Team India."
