New Delhi: Domestic and international air travel will soon become costlier as ATF accounts for 40 per cent of an airline's operating cost, due to the ever-increasing rise in aviation turbine fuel or jet fuel. In fact, today i.e. on Thursday, the ATF price in New Delhi increased by 16.3 percent. Now after that it touched an all-time high of Rs 1.41 lakh per kilolitre. This is the biggest increase in the last 3 months. Let us tell you that the price of ATF has increased from Rs 1,21,476 per kiloliter to Rs 1,41,233 per kiloliter.
In fact, ATF prices have almost doubled in the six months of 2022 and now the only option for airline companies to deal with rising prices and depreciating rupee is to hike fares as both these factors contribute to the operating cost of the carrier. We do. SpiceJet's chairman and managing director Ajay Singh told TOI, "The current prices are volatile and the airline will need to increase the airfares by at least 10 per cent to 15 per cent." The government levies significant VAT and duty on jet fuel, making ATF in India one of the most expensive in the world now.
Along with this, Singh further added that, 'Jet fuel is 50 percent of the operating cost of SpiceJet and the prices have increased by 120 percent from June 2021.' Apart from this, he urged the central and state governments to reduce the prices of ATF. You all know that the Jharkhand government has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on aircraft fuel from 20 per cent to four per cent in the state.
