New Delhi: Are Rs 2000 notes going to be closed in the country? This question has been troubling people for the past several days. Now the Modi government has once again clarified its stand on the 2000 rupee note. The Lok Sabha has said that currency notes of Rs. 2000 have not been printed in the last two years. This has reduced the number of these big notes in the market. In a written reply, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur said that 3,362 million notes worth 2000 were in vogue on 30th March 2018. Till 26th February 2021, 2,499 million notes of Rs. 2,000 were in the market. Since April 2019, 2000 rupee notes are not being printed.

Anurag Thakur has said that the government is in constant touch with the RBI to facilitate public transactions and take full care of their demands. The notes which are in circulation are being taken care of. It is the endeavor of the Government to have a mixture of small notes in circulation. It has been decided to stop the printing of 2000 rupee notes only after consultation with RBI in this regard. No indent has been placed with the press for the printing of notes worth Rs. 2000 during 2019-20 and 2020-21. The Reserve Bank of India had said in 2019 that 3,542.991 million notes worth Rs 2,000 were printed during the financial year 2016-17 (April 2016 to March 2017). The Government is of the view that big notes will be limited in running and will help in curbing black money.

In November 2016, the Modi government had suddenly announced a note closure. Then, old notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 were closed and new notes of Rs. 10, 20, 50, and 100 were issued with Rs. 500.
