Any connection' between Anil Ambani's tax waiver and Rafale deal is inaccurate: Defence Ministry

New Delhi: In the response of a report in the French daily, Le Monde, which claimed that the French government waived off  €143.7 million in taxes for Anil Ambani group's company ‘Reliance Atlantic Flag France’ after the Rafale deal was announced, Defence Ministry said that any connection made  between the tax issue and the Rafale matter is totally inaccurate.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said, “We've seen reports drawing conjectural connection between tax exemption to a private company and procurement of Rafale jets by the Government of India (GOI). Neither the period of tax concession nor subject matter of concession relate to Rafale procurement, concluded in present Govt's tenure.

The statement further said, “Any connections drawn between the tax issue and the Rafale matter is totally inaccurate, tendentious and is a mischievous attempt to disinform.”

The report of French daily claimed that Ambani’s telecom company in France, Reliance Atlantic Flag France, was under investigation by the French tax authorities and was supposed to pay €60 million in taxes in the period 2007-2010. Reliance offered to pay €7.6 million to settle its dues with the French government. The same was rejected by France after a prolonged investigation during 2010-12 and asked for an additional Euros 91 million raising the total liability to € 151 million.
