Dr Aparna Dutta Mahanta, the founder-director of the Women's Study Centre, former professor of the English Department at Dibrugarh University (DU), and prolific writer, died on Wednesday due to an old age condition. She was 75 years old at the time.
She attended St.School Mary's in Shillong and then graduated from St.College. Mary's She is the wife of eminent scientist Dr. Paramananda Mahanta. Dr. Aparna Dutta Mahanta earned a masters degree in English literature from Gauhati University and a British Council Scholarship from Leeds University. She began her career as a professor in the University of Denver's English Department, where she stayed until her retirement.
Dr Mahanta, who was born in Sivasagar on August 20, 1946, was the first Assamese woman to receive a PhD in the state and a pioneer in the modern feminist movement. She published a number of novels and founded the Aideour Jonaki Bat, an Assamese magazine. Professors, DU staff in general, and members of the Women Studies Centre (WSC) in particular were all saddened by her death.
