New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is retiring on 31 December. Due to this, the process of appointing a new army chief has been started. Military officials have given information in this regard on Wednesday. Three names are the most discussed in the race for the new army chief. These include Lt General MM Naravane, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh and Lt Gen SK Saini.

It is worth mentioning that the process of appointing a new army chief starts four-five months before the current Chief of Army Staff retires. The intervention of the Ministry of Defense in the appointment of the new Chief of Army Staff is very less. The final decision on the appointment of the new army chief will be taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is the only minister who is a member of the Appointments Committee. The selection of the first new Chief of Army Staff was announced a month or 45 days before the current Army Chief retires. However, this perception has changed now. Earlier, General Bipin Rawat had said while speaking on the Kashmir issue that the Valley is peaceful only after the removal of Article 370 and also said that there is no such situation as curfew in Jammu and Kashmir.
