Popular Indian composer AR Rahman's mother Kareema Begum has passed away in Chennai. The cause of her death cannot be ascertained at the moment. AR Rahman shared a picture of her on social media to mark the sad moment.

The Oscar and Grammy award-winning music composer Rahman was extremely close to his mother and in many previous interviews, he has disclosed that it was his mother who had realised his flair in music and had nurtured it. Kareema Begum was the wife of famous music composer RK Sekhar who passed away in 1976 and is survived by her daughters AR Reihana, Ishrath Qadri, Fathima Shekhar apart from Rahman. 

Kareema's children have credited her for bringing them up as a single mother and instrumental in helping them to achieve in the field of music. Rahman, who was born Dileep, was single-handedly raised by his mother (Kasthuri Sekhar) after his father and music composer RO Sekhar died when Rahman was only 9 years old.
