Aden: In the midst of renewed efforts from Saudi Arabia to mediate a durable peace between the warring factions, Arab nations and organisations have praised the three-day prisoner exchange that was successful between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's representative to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, and a delegation from Oman visited Sanaa last week to talk with the Houthis about "stabilising the truce and ceasefire" and ultimately putting an end to the conflict in the nation.

Under the supervision of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, a multi-day humanitarian operation moved close to 900 prisoners into and out of a number of cities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

In a statement, the Arab Parliament expressed its appreciation for the prisoner exchange operation and emphasised that these "efforts were part of the Arab's continuous efforts to calm the situation in Yemen and reach a comprehensive political solution that ends the Yemeni crisis."

Hissein Brahim Taha, the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), also praised the prisoner exchange as a significant humanitarian action that took place during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The OIC leader expressed hope that the prisoner swap would give the efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman to mediate for peace in Yemen a new impetus.

The prisoner transfer was nonetheless hailed by Egypt's foreign affairs ministry as "a positive and significant step towards renewing the Yemeni truce and achieving comprehensive and sustainable peace.

Cairo also pledged its unwavering support for initiatives aimed at easing Yemenis' humanitarian crisis and restoring security and stability in the country.

The UN and ICRC were praised by the Jordanian foreign affairs ministry for their crucial sponsorship of the prisoner exchange operations, and the delegations from Saudi Arabia and Oman were applauded for their efforts in negotiating the agreement.

Both sides are confident that there will be additional prisoner exchanges in the future. The Houthi side intends to suggest exchanging 1,400 people during the next round of negotiations, and the Yemeni government is "dedicated to exchanging all detainees with the Houthis as well as clearing jails of those who had been kidnapped or forcibly disappeared during the war."
