Bengaluru: The Archbishop of Bengaluru, Peter Machado, wrote a letter to Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Friday, opposing the State government's decision to table an anti-conversion bill in the upcoming winter session, urging him not to promote "an undesirable and discriminatory bill" in the interest of societal peace and harmony.

In the letter, he stated that the Anti-Conversion Bill is opposed by the entire Christian community in Karnataka. "The whole Christian Community in Karnataka opposes the proposed Anti-Conversion Bill in unison and questions the need for such an exercise when there are sufficient laws and court directions in place to monitor any deviation of the existing laws," he said.

The Archbishop warned that enacting such laws would violate citizens' rights, particularly those of minority communities, citing Articles 25 and 26 of the constitution. He also questioned the Karnataka government's decision to survey both official and non-official Christian missionaries, as well as the state's institutions and establishments.

The Archbishop had earlier noted on October 26 that the Christian community will oppose the state government's move to enact an Anti-Conversion Bill (ACB), calling it "unnecessary" and stating that it would jeopardise religious harmony in the state.
