NEW DELHI: Are we Indians turning Nomophobic? Big question before more than a billion citizen in the country as the survey report suggests 61 percent of smartphones owner in the country checking their phones is among the first and last things they do every day as they look at their devices within five minutes of waking up.

According to the Deloitte Global Mobile Consumer Survey, 2016, 61 percent of respondents in the survey said they regularly sleep with their cell or smartphone turned on under their pillow or next to their bed, and more than 50 percent feel uncomfortable when they leave their smartphone at home or in the car, or when they have no service or their phone is broken. Signs you are truly addicted.

Interestingly, 74 percent respondents check their mobile phones about 15 minutes before going to sleep.

The number swells to 88 percent when considering people who take less than 30 minutes after waking up to check their phones. Around 96 percent of the respondents take about less than an hour to peep into their handsets each morning.

ABOUT GLOBAL STUDY: The study, covering 53,000 people, includes over 2,000 respondents from India.

ABOUT REPORT: The report found social networks and instant messaging were the two things consumers check on their smartphones first thing in the morning. These are followed by personal emails and text messages.

ABOUT USAGE: Respondents from India said they also use their devices to check bank balances (54pc), pay utility bills (54 pc) and services bills (53 pc). This is followed by transferring money within the country (38 pc) and abroad (31 pc).

ABOUT NOMOPHOBIA: Nomophobia (or, no-mobile-phone-phobia), a fancy term for intense, irrational fear of being out of mobile phone contact.
