According to media reports, the PDP leader, who has been seen to be virtually dysfunctional in Kashmir since August 5, 2019, was seen active about the anniversary of Mufti Mohammad for the past fortnight. He had planned to pay tribute to the tomb at Dara Shikoh Bagh, Bijbihara on 7 January.

Recently, a meeting of the leaders of the organization was called in Srinagar, in which he was going to discuss the strategy ahead. During this time, he was about to get his consent by giving custody to Mehbooba Mufti about the decision and proposal to be taken. Mehbooba's daughter Iltija Mufti arrived in Srinagar from Delhi last week to oversee the entire exercise and organize a condolence meeting and attempted to visit her maternal grandfather's grave. On stopping this, he objected strongly and also wrote a letter to the administration.
