The Congress President who Rejected Afzal Guru's Mercy Petition On Govt's Advice

Today is the 86th birth anniversary of Pranab Mukherjee, who has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, one of india's best presidents. An outstanding politician who made a significant contribution to the development of the country. Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th President of India to hold the post from July 25, 2012 to July 25, 2017. An experienced face in Indian politics, who, during decades of long and excellent political career, took over the charge of important ministries like External Affairs, Defence, Commercial and Finance At various times. He was a veteran Congress leader and served as a member of the Congress Working Committee for 23 years. CM Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have also paid tributes on the birth anniversary of the great leader today.


Born on December 11, 1935, Pranab Da's father's name was Shri Kamda Kinkar Mukherjee and mother's name was Rajalakshmi. His father, Shri Kamda Kinkar Mukherjee, was a freedom fighter and he was also a member of the Congress for a long time. Pranab Da started his career as a teacher and journalist, but then followed in his father's footsteps. He got a big break in politics when then PM Indira Gandhi chose him to go to Rajya sabha from congress. He did not look back after that and in 2012 he took over as the 13th President of India, India's highest office. For his contribution to the country, he was awarded India's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' in 2019.


As President, Pranab Mukherjee had turned down 35 mercy petitions. This number is more than the total number of mercy petitions rejected by them earlier. When he reached Rashtrapati Bhavan in July 2012, there were already 10 petitions pending.  Among those whose mercy petition he had rejected were Amir Ajmal Kasab, the perpetrator of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, Afzal Guru of the 2001 Parliament attack and the nirbhaya case convict.
