New Delhi: Justice Leila Seth is one of the few women who have written history in the country. Leila was the first Chief Justice of a High Court. Leila, popularly known as 'Mother of Law', became the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court. Leila Seth was the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court as well as the first woman Chief Justice of a High Court (Himachal Pradesh).  

Leila has been one of the major decision-making committees on women's rights in India. She was also part of the 15th Law Commission, which suggested some important amendments to the Hindu Succession Act. During this time, it was decided to give equal rights to women in the family property. Along with this, she was also involved in the Justice Verma Committee, which was formed after the Nirbhaya gang rape. Leila Seth was one of the members of the three-member committee headed by Justice Verma.  

In its report, the committee suggested putting marital rape as illegal and a crime. Leila had also raised her voice for lesbians, including women. Mother of Law i.e. Leila Seth, who wrote her name in history, breathed her last at the age of 86. She died of a heart attack on May 5, 2017.
