New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of Jatindra Nath Das, the immortal fighter of the Indian freedom struggle. He was born on this day in 1904 in Kolkata, undivided Bengal. He along with other revolutionaries went on a hunger strike in Lahore Jail. After 63 days of the strike, Jatin Das surrendered to the country and his sacrifice raised the spirits of the revolutionaries. The whole country was shaken by this. Jatin Das, who sacrificed his life for the cause of patriotism, was not only the son of Bengal but also of India. He was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and he participated in Gandhi's non-cooperation movement in 1921. In November 1925, Jatin Das, who was studying BA at Vidyasagar College in Kolkata, was arrested for political activities.

He was imprisoned in Mymensingh Central Jail. He went on a hunger strike for 20 days against the misbehaviour in the prison. He assisted in making bombs for Bhagat Singh and Comrade. He was captured on 14 June 1929 due to revolutionary steps. After this, he was imprisoned in Lahore Jail. He also demanded equality for Indian prisoners and undertrials. The prison administration used to keep political prisoners in a very wrong way. The kitchen area and food of the prisoners were full of rats and cockroaches. Newspapers, papers etc. were not kept for them. His uniforms were not washed for many days. On the other hand, the condition of British prisoners was very bad. Jatin Das's hunger strike in jail was a significant effort in the resistance against illegal detention.

In such a situation, the revolutionaries started a hunger strike from July 13, 1929, which lasted for 63 days. Jatin Das had not eaten anything for the last 63 days. In such a situation, he became very weak and was martyred on 13 September 1929. His mortal remains were taken to Kolkata. People across the country gathered to pay tribute to him. During his last rites, a two-mile-long procession was held near the funeral site in Kolkata.
