New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's wife and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is celebrating her 76th birthday today i.e. December 9.  Sonia Gandhi's life is nothing short of an interesting story. She came to India as the wife of Rajiv, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and after that, despite all the family ups and downs, she kept herself away from politics and then finally stepped into politics.  Sonia Gandhi, who initially barely spoke Hindi, established herself as the biggest leader of the Congress and her status still remains intact.

According to a report, Sonia Gandhi's real name is Edvige Antonia Albina Maino, which is also recorded on her birth certificate. However, there is no clear information about who gave her the name Sonia, maybe Rajiv Gandhi gave her this name. Sonia was born on December 9, 1946, in Louisiana, Italy, as the daughter of Stefano and Paola Mino.  In 1964, Sonia went to Cambridge city of Britain to study English, while Rajiv Gandhi was studying at The College of Trinity of Cambridge University. Rajiv and Sonia met at a restaurant, where Sonia worked as a part-time waitress. One day, Rajiv fell in love with this waitress in the same restaurant.

After dating each other for 3 years, Rajiv and Sonia got married in Delhi in 1968. It is said that this marriage took place in Amitabh Bachchan's house. Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan and Rajiv's mother Indira Gandhi were close friends. After this marriage, Sonia Gandhi came to India; today we know her as one of the most powerful women in the country.
