New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of legendary physicist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Satyendranath Bose. Satyendra Nath Bose, along with the great scientist Albert Einstein, gave the Bose-Einstein theory. Bose had discovered a sub-atomic particle, which was named boson to honour Bose. Born on January 1, 1894, in Kolkata, Satyendar Nath Bose is known all over the world for his work in quantum physics in the 1920s.

Satyendra Nath's father Surendranath Bose used to work in the engineering department of the East Indian Railway Company. Satyendra Nath was the eldest of his seven children. His early education took place at Bara Jagulia village in Nadia district. He joined from Presidency College, Kolkata, where he was taught by scholars like Jagdish Chandra Bose and Prafull Chandra Ray. Satyendra Nath completed his MSc from Applied Maths in 1915. He had topped the MSc, it is said that he passed by record numbers. This record still stands today. In 1924, as a reader in the Department of Physics at Dhaka University, he wrote a paper on quantum statistics and sent it to the famous scientist Albert Einstein. Einstein was very impressed with this and translated it into German and sent it to be published in a German science journal. It was on the basis of this identity that Satyendra Nath got the opportunity to work in the Science Lab in Europe.

In 1937, the great poet Rabindranath Tagore had dedicated his book on Science to Satyandra Nath Bose. The Government of India awarded Bose the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-highest civilian honour, in 1954. Bose died in 1974. Apart from discussing his scholarship, he is also remembered for not being respected according to him. Many scientists have been awarded Nobel prizes for their work on the particle bosons discovered by him, but Satyendra Nath Bose himself was not awarded the Nobel Prize for it.
