Dr Vikram Sarabhai is said to be the father of the Indian space mission. That's because the ISRO whose space flights we read or hear today were founded by Dr Sarabhai. Dr Sarabhai was also the one who guided the country's missile man and former President Dr Abdul Kalam Azad. Even in the last moments of his life, he was busy discussing the design of the SLV rocket over the phone with Dr Kalam. Today is the death anniversary of Dr Sarabhai.
Dr Sarabhai was born on August 12, 1919, to a business family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Dr Vikram's father Ambalal Sarabhai was a renowned businessman from Ahmedabad. They had many pulse mills. Dr Vikram's mother's name was Sarla Devi. He studied matriculation from Gujarat College in Ahmedabad and moved to England for further studies. Here he joined St. John's College, Cambridge University. It was from this university that he studied NST (Natural Science Tripos). When Dr Sarabhai returned to India after studying in Cambridge, he persuaded a charitable trust controlled by his friends and family to develop as an experimenting institution. He then laid the foundation stone of physical research (PRL) in Ahmedabad on September 11, 1947. The formation of this institution is considered to be Dr Sarabhai's first step towards space. He stayed here and worked from 1966-71. He was then appointed chairman of the Nuclear Commission.
Dr Sarabhai not only worked for the world of space but also had deep relations with the industry. So he laid the foundation stone of IIM Ahmedabad in Ahmedabad with the help of industrialist friends. Not only that, but he was also very active in the development work of Ahmedabad city. It was he who launched India's first satellite Aryabhatta from the Russia Space Centre in 1975. Former President Dr Abdul Kalam Azad considered him his Guru. He had also spoken to Dr Kalam over the phone about the design of the SLV in his last moments. He suffered a heart attack after keeping the phone and died. Dr Sarabhai was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan after his death in 1977.
