Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is the president of Dera Sacha Sauda, a spiritual institution based in Sirsa in Haryana. The Dera Sacha Sauda was founded in 1948 by Shah Mastanaji. Gurmeet is the third head of the institution. However, during Ram Rahim's tenure, Dera's unprecedented publicity spread and the number of followers increased manifold. The Dera Sacha Sauda, led by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, has done a lot of positive things, new experiments took place, while Gurmeet has always been in contention.

The controversy culminated in the conviction of Gurmeet by the court in a sexual abuse case on August 25, 2017. Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 65 lakh rupees and Ram Rahim was convicted on January 11, 2019, in the Ram Chandra Chhatrapati murder case and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Special Court of CBI on January 17, 2019.

On August 25, 2017, a special CBI court in Panchkula convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in a rape case. This led to riots in Panchkula and Sirsa, and the administration's action resulted in 38 deaths, according to official figures. Ram Rahim is currently incarcerated in Sunaria jail in Rohtak district of Haryana.
