New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the great social reformer of the country. Gokhale, the political guru of Mahatma Gandhi, was one of the street viewers of the Indian national movement.  Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on May 9, 1866, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.  Gokhale was born nine years after the freedom struggle of 1857 AD. Gokhale's first entry into politics took place in 1888 at the Congress session in Allahabad. 

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was influenced by Mahadev Govind Ranade. He once said, "I am also satisfied with the wrong thing to do with Ranade Saheb, but I will not do any work by separating from him." Ranade Gopal Krishna was the guru of Gokhale and Gandhiji considered him his guru. Gokhale was a political thinker who brought spiritual concepts to politics. Gokhale was the first person to emphasize the idea of swadeshi. 

Gopal Krishna Gokhale considered Hindu and Muslim unity to be beneficial to India. He said that being a majority and being educated, it is the duty of Hindus to help their Muslim brothers in developing a sense of common nationhood. Jinnah was considered to be the greatest advocate of the Hindu and Muslim brotherhood. Along with Gandhiji, Gokhale was also Jinnah's political guru. Later, Gopal Krishna Gokhale started suffering from many serious diseases like diabetes, and asthma. After which on February 19, 1915, he took his last breath in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
