Today is the birthday of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former UP CM Mayawati. She is 66 years old today. When Mayawati's name comes up and there is talk of a guest house scandal. June 2, 1995, is known as the State Guest House scandal in UP's history. The BSP chief at that time was Kanshiram. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav wrote a new era of politics in 1993 in alliance with Kanshiram. Both the parties contested the assembly elections together and won power, but two years later the relationship took a turn that changed the UP’s situation.

On June 2, 1995, the BSP announced the withdrawal of support from the government due to a confrontation in the coalition government. This brought the Mulayam Government to a minority. SP workers, led by MPs and MLAs, started cordoning off the State Guest House at Mirabai Marg in Lucknow. BSP leader Mayawati is said to have stayed in room 1 of the same guest house at that time.  BSP MLA and workers were also present but Mulayam Singh's workers took them hostage. The situation was such that the SP leaders started kidnapping BSP MLAs and Mayawati locked the room from inside to protect herself. The drama continued for several hours. Finally, with the intervention of some BJP leaders, the matter reached Raj Bhavan and the police became active and somehow Mayawati was rescued.

The guest house scandal had added a black emerald to UP's politics. Three cases were registered in Hazratganj Kotwali against several leaders including Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal Singh Yadav, veteran SP leaders Dhaniram Verma, Azam Khan, Beni Prasad Verma in protest against Mayawati's attack after the incident. It presented captured photographs of photographers as evidence. the CB CID filed the charge sheet after investigation. After that, governments kept coming, but the case of the State Guest House scandal continued. However, 24 years after the scandal, the SP BSP came together in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and Mayawati withdrew her case.  Mayawati, however, still regrets her decision.
