New Delhi: The elderly are like the banyan tree in our house whose pleasant shade makes the whole family feel safe and happy. It is no less than a treasure to have them in our lives. A special day is celebrated highlighting the importance of these elderly people in our lives. International Day for Older Persons is observed on 1st October every year.

This day is known by many names. Some call it 'International Day of The Old Age,' and somewhere it is also known as 'International Senior Citizen Day,' On the other hand, someone calls this day 'International Day of The Elderly' or 'World Adult Day.' Although we should respect the elderly citizens every day, this special day has been adopted to create awareness about it. Just as there are many important reasons behind celebrating every particular day, there is a special purpose to celebrate this day. Under this objective, 'International Day of The Elderly' is observed every year on 1st October every year to curb injustice and abuse of the elderly in the world.

On December 14, 1990, the United Nations (UN) decided that October 1, 2010, would be observed as International Day of the Elderly, with the aim of curbing injustice and abuse of the elderly all over the world, as well as making the elderly aware of their rights. This will also make the elderly realise their importance and give them a proper place and respect in society as well as in the family. International Day of the Elderly was first celebrated on 1st October 1991 and since then International Day of the Elderly is celebrated on the same day every year.
