New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of the country's freedom fighter Motilal Nehru. Motilal Nehru was born on May 6, 1861, in a Kashmiri Brahmin family in Delhi. You were twice elected Congress president, founded the Swaraj Party, the leader of the opposition in the Central Assembly, drafted a constitution for India and Motilal Nehru was a major freedom fighter in the freedom struggle. He was one of the most intelligent lawyers in the country. He played a key role in the Congress and was also elected president of the Congress twice and was known as the father of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was respectfully called Pandit Motilal Nehru.

His father was Gangadhar and his mother was Jeevrani. Motilal Nehru's father died before Motilal's birth. Motilal Nehru was one of the first young generations of India to receive a 'Western style' college education. He enrolled in Muir College in Agra but failed to appear in the BA final year examination. He decided to join the legal profession and appeared in the law examination. Motilal Nehru secured the first position in the law examination and started his career as a lawyer in Kanpur in 1883.

Motilal Nehru later settled in Allahabad and made his mark as one of the best lawyers in the country. In 1909, after gaining approval to become a lawyer at the Privy Council of Great Britain, he reached the pinnacle of his legal profession. In 1910, Motilal contested and won the assembly elections of the United Provinces. Hurt by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he decided to enter the freedom struggle. He gave up his luxury lifestyle, western clothes and other items and started wearing khadi. Motilal Nehru was arrested in 1930 in the wake of the civil disobedience movement. In view of his deteriorating health, he was released in 1931 and on February 6, 1931, Motilal Nehru died in Lucknow.
